In this talk, I will first provide a brief outline of the visions of a Smarter Electricity Grid, and the creation of Virtual Power Plants to help integrate the numerous distributed renewable energy resources into the electricity network. Game Theory (GT) and Mechanism Design (MD) have to play a vital part in materializing these dreams. As an example application of GT and MD techniques in this domain, I will present the design of a payoff distribution mechanism which can be utilized by cooperatives of renewable energy producers, and which promotes efficiency in the face of uncertainty.
