Chania

About Chania

Chania, with a population of about 85,000, is the second largest city on the island of Crete, and a beautiful place indeed, with a rich history and culture. It enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate, and is very popular with tourists, especially during the summer months. Its “old town” and Venetian harbour are particularly beautiful, and it is surrounded by nice beaches and picturesque villages. Visitors are expected to particularly enjoy local hospitality and good, tasty, healthy food, prepared with local ingredients and cooked according to traditional local recipes. Accessibility

Chania is easily accessible throughout the year from the Greek mainland (by airplane and boat) and Cyprus (by airplane). During summer time, international flights connect Chania directly to many other places in Europe and the Middle East. Some of these flights are operated by low budget airlines, making the travel to Chania quite affordable. The Chania airport is just 10 minutes away from the School venue and only 25 minutes away from the city centre (by private car; public buses take a bit longer). In addition, several low budget airlines operate flights to the Heraklion airport, which is located approximately 2.5 hours away from Chania (by car). There exist affordable accommodation options that lie within a walking distance from the venue.

Getting to Chania

By Air: Fly to either Chania Airport Ioannis Daskalogiannis (CHQ, located just 15 mins away from the School venue); or to Heraklion airport (HER, located 2.5 hours away by car).

By Sea: Travel to Chania (or to Heraklion) by ferry. Full-time students of Greek Universities are able to enjoy a 50% discount on their personal tickets regardless of EASSS-2014 participation on all ferries.
